What are root canals?

Dr. Hoopes performs a root canal treatment when the interior part of a tooth — called the pulp — is badly damaged and infected. Pulp gets inflamed when bacteria gets in through a chip, crack, decay, or filling in the tooth.

Pulp resides in your tooth’s inner chamber, which extends into canals that stretch through the roots and into bone. When infection sets in, the pulp must be removed in order to prevent bigger medical issues.

The main purpose of a root canal is to save your damaged tooth from extraction.

How do I know if I need a
root canal?

Pain is usually the telltale signal that you need a root canal as quickly as possible.

Other symptoms that indicate you may need a root canal procedure are:

  • Infection or abscess
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and/or cold
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Tender gums
  • Discomfort when chewing
  • A very bad taste from time to time with the absence of pain

What can I expect during a root canal procedure?

If a root canal is needed, rest assured a proper evaluation with X-rays will be done to indicate the prognosis of the tooth prior to the root canal being performed.

If Dr. Hoopes determines that you will benefit from a root canal procedure, he guides you through the process so that you know exactly what to expect. Root canals are spaced over one or two appointments.

In general, the following steps are part of the course of treatment:

  • Anesthetic: Dr. Hoopes keeps you completely comfortable with a numbing anesthetic
  • Dental dam: A dam is placed to keep your mouth open and your tongue from accidentally drifting to the work site
  • Pulpectomy: Dr. Hoopes makes a small opening and extracts the infectious pulp from the canal
  • Filling: open roots are filled with a naturally occurring, rubber-like material and sealed
  • Covering: a temporary crown is placed over the root canal tooth to protect it

After the procedure, you return home to rest or, if you feel up to it, back to work or school. In most cases, you’ll return to the office in a couple of weeks for the placement of your permanent crown.

When you’re in terrible pain and you need a root canal right away, call the office to learn more or use the easy scheduler to book your appointment online.
